The Champions League Final was delayed due to issues with getting Liverpool fans into Stade de France, and the scene was absolutely terrifying chaos.

A tragic and terrifying scene unfolded outside of the Champions League Final on Saturday as Liverpool supporters were reportedly locked out in a miserable display of crowd control causing a delay to the biggest sporting event in the world.

UEFA claimed that the delay was due to late-arriving Liverpool fans, but that story quickly fell apart once word from outside started to trickle in. Images and footage from outside of Stade de France showed thousands of Liverpool supporters trapped outside of gates that were suddenly and unexpectedly closed by security.

Liverpool fans were reportedly locked out and gassed trying to enter UCL Final

Images and footage of Liverpool fans stuck outside of Stade de France were absolute chaos and truly disheartening. Fans, who paid good money for a ticket and transportation to France for the biggest football match of the year, were kept on the outside of gates by security and were not given a reason as to why.

Naturally, these elements collided to create mass chaos and panic that harkens back to the darkest days in Liverpool’s history.

Footage from outside showed security in full body armor pepper-spraying Liverpool fans trapped on the other side of the entry gates.

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey gave a report from outside Stade de France that painted a picture of fans being prevented from passing through security gates and being tear-gassed.

He recounted what a fan reportedly said about the situation unfolding.

“He said that a huge number of Liverpool fans were tear-gassed by the French police, including families and children. His eyes were streaming. He looked distraught.”

One fan told reporters that he had gone beyond wanting to watch a football match and just wanted to find his brother who he had lost track of in the chaos.

CBS aired footage of fans attempting to climb the gates to try and gain access to the stadium and circumvent security, which when viewed alongside the statement from UEFA reinforced the idea that the delay was the fault of Liverpool fans.

Back in 1989, before a FA Cup semifinal match against Nottingham Forest, 96 Liverpool supporters were killed when security failed to properly control the crowd entering Hillsborough Stadium. It’s nearly impossible to see the terrifying images outside of Stade de France, the utter ineptitude of UEFA and the security on the scene, and not think about the tragedy that Liverpool suffered over three decades ago.

This story is still developing and will be updated when more information is made available.
