Vikings: Kellen Mond gives most damning commentary on Mike Zimmer yet
By John Buhler
Kellen Mond provided the most damning comment about former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer ever.
Apparently, Kellen Mond did not have any relationship with his former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer whatsoever…
Mond may have been a third-round pick out of Texas A&M by the Vikings last spring, but the former Aggies star rarely saw the field. He appeared in one game for the 2021 Vikings, completing 2-of-3 passes for five yards. When asked by Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press about Zimmer’s harsh criticism of him after the Green Bay Packers‘ game, Mond offered the following.
"“He’s never really talked to me personally, so I didn’t really take too much offense to it,” said Mond to Chris Thomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “He kind of backtracked on his word a little bit after, but it’s all fun and games. Whatever, it’s a new year, new coaches, new team.”"
So Zimmer never really took the time to talk to his former rookie quarterback? What a disaster!
Minnesota Vikings QB Kellen Mond said he and Mike Zimmer never really spoke
While Zimmer was a defensive-minded head coach and a very successful defensive coordinator before that, how can you not have much of a relationship with a quarterback your team used a day-two pick on? Kirk Cousins was never going to be challenged as the Minnesota starter, but Zimmer not giving Mond the time of day is exceptionally off-putting. It may be why he is gone.
As far as what the future holds for Mond, he enters year two as a professional under a new regime. While former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman is no longer in Minneapolis either, Mond does benefit from having a former quarterback as his offensive-minded head coach in Kevin O’Connell. The question is if he fits into new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s plans or not.
Ultimately, Mond is probably not going to play very much this season either. Minnesota should be a playoff team this fall, especially with Cousins still in the midst of his prime. What is important though is for Mond to have a better working relationship with his new head coach this time around. If he and O’Connell do not have much of one after this season, then that is a big problem.
Mond has a great opportunity to make a first impression with the new guys running the Vikings.
