3 Yankees players who won’t be on the roster July 1

2. Joey Gallo will not be on the Yankees on July 1
There was a contingent of New York Yankees fans who didn’t want to see Joey Gallo on the team’s Opening Day roster. After the struggles incurred by the slugger to begin his 2022 campaign, those vocal fans are only going to get louder.
Gallo was part of a trade with Texas Rangers last season that sent four prospects to Arlington. The Rangers received shortstop Josh Smith, pitcher Glen Otto, and infielders Ezequiel Duran and Trevor Hauver. Three of those prospects are among the Top 20 in the Rangers farm system according to MLB Pipeline and Otto is on Texas’ 2022 major league roster.
It’ll be hard to see the Yankees admitting such a big mistake by just letting Gallo go. Furthermore, New York would be on the hook for the remainder of the 28-year-old’s 2022 salary unless he was picked up on waivers by a rival organization.
But perhaps the Yankees could find a trade partner in the coming weeks. But who would be crazy enough to take on Joey Gallo’s lack of production and the remaining salary from his one-year, $10.2 million contract?
If New York were willing to take on some of Gallo’s salary or include a prospect in a potential deal, maybe the Yankees will be able to part with the outfielder’s services.
