Yankees: 5 under-the-radar trade deadline candidates
By Drew Koch
2. The Yankees could trade for Wade Miley.
Wade Miley entered last offseason with a $10M team-option, but the Cincinnati Reds chose instead to waive the left-hander. The Chicago Cubs pounced on the opportunity to bring the southpaw into their clubhouse.
After a slow start to the 2022 season that included a stint on the IL, Miley was back on the mound and made three starts before landing on the 15-day IL just a few days ago with a shoulder strain. Neither Miley nor his manager expect the injury to keep the 34-year-old on the shelf for too long.
When Miley is on his game, he’s one of the most efficient pitchers in the game. The left-hander works fast and keeps the ball on the ground. Miley is never going to light up the radar gun or have double-digit strikeouts, but he’s able to successfully navigate his way through the batting order and is usually good for six or more innings each and every night.
As we discussed early when talking about Miley’s former teammate Tyler Mahle, the New York Yankees don’t need an ace — but another starter who can give New York a quality start every fifth day would certainly help bolster their rotation down the stretch.
