Robinson Cano released by Padres less than a month after signing

Robinson Cano’s tenure with the San Diego Padres is over after less than a month, as he has been designated for assignment.

Earlier in the year, Robinson Cano was informed by the New York Mets that he was being designated for assignment, which ultimately led to his release. It did not take long for Cano to find a new team in the form of the San Diego Padres. But, his tenure is close to reaching its end.

According to FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray and later multiple other sources, the Padres are designating Cano for assignment less than a month after joining the team. After declining the option, the expectation is he’ll be released.

As noted by Dennis Lin of The Athletic, moving on from Cano means San Diego will call up Nomar Mazara from Triple-A.

Cano had missed the entirety of the 2021 season due to testing positive for a performance enhancing drug policy. After playing the first month of this season, the Mets, much like the rest of the league, had to cut down their rosters from 28 players to 26. The team decided to designate him for assignment, even though they will eat the remaining $37.6 million left on his contract.

In just 12 games with the Mets this season, Cano slashed .195/.233/.268 while recording one home run, three RBI and eight hits.

It did not take long for Cano to find a new home, as he signed on with the Padres later that week.

Since joining San Diego, Cano had only played 11 games for the team. In that span, he recorded a 0.094 batting average, a .121 on-base percentage and a 0.94 slugging percentage. Cano struck out 10 times and recorded just three hits.

It will remain to be seen what is next for Cano, but he is being designated for assignment by the Padres.
