Devin Haney dethrones George Kambosos Jr. to become undisputed
Devin Haney traveled to Australia and defeated George Kambosos Jr. on the road to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
On Saturday, June 4, Devin Haney proved that he is faster and stronger than George Kambosos Jr. as he defeated Kambosos by unanimous decision to become the undisputed lightweight boxing champion of the world.
Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) traveled to Australia from the U.S. to play the role of road warrior against Kambosos. He had 41,129 Australian fans at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne rooting against him, but Haney’s skills proved superior to Kambosos’.
Haney faced some pre-fight drama as his father and trainer, Bill Haney, wasn’t allowed to enter Australia because he wasn’t granted a visa. A day before the contest, Bill received his visa, raced to Australia, and made it in time to be in his son’s corner.

His father’s presence likely added comfort and confidence, but nothing in the fight showed that Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs) stood a chance of defeating the 23-year-old Haney.

Haney out-boxed Kambosos from bell to bell. He employed his jab to maintain distance and racked up points behind it.
Kambosos tried to bullrush Haney, but Haney easily eluded Kambosos’ attacks. His footwork held up, and his reaction time frustrated Kambosos.
Neither boxer appeared hurt in the fight, but Haney kept the contest a boxing match instead of a brawl. That framework played to Haney’s strengths, and Kambosos appeared more dejected round by round.
The judges returned two cards of 116-112 and one of 118-110, all for Haney. Haney added Kambosos’ IBF, WBA and WBO belts to his WBC title to become undisputed.
A rematch clause would require Haney to defend his four titles against Kambosos in Australia, but Kambosos needs to enact that clause for the rematch to occur.
It’s hard to fathom that Kambosos wouldn’t want a chance at reclaiming his belts, so expect them to meet again soon.
