Jack Del Rio’s statement says Jan. 6 isn’t ‘dust up’

Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio has now backtracked on his previous comments that the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol was a “dust-up.”

The Washington Commanders have been no stranger to controversy. This week, defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio made some controversial comments about the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, where he downplayed it’s severity in a tweet. He then doubled down on his social media post while speaking to the media on Wednesday, June 8, calling the insurrection a “dust up.”

Hours after his comments went viral, Del Rio released a statement through his Twitter account, now apologizing for calling the attack a “dust-up,” saying it was “irresponsible and negligent.” You can read Del Rio’s statement in full below.

Del Rio’s comments stemmed from the upcoming primetime hearings by the Jan. 6 committee consisting of nine members of the House of Representatives. The defensive coordinator took to Twitter to ask “why the summer of riots, looting, burning and the destruction of personal property is never discussed.” That is in reference to the protests that took place in the summer of 2020 following the death of George Floyd.

The reality is that Jan. 6 was not a dust-up. It was a day in which there was a violent attempt to halt the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory over then-President Donald Trump, in hopes of keeping the latter in office.

The attack of the Capitol resulted in multiple deaths. Over 140 police officers were injured while defending the Capitol.

That is why there is a hearing by the Jan. 6 committee, and they are set to unveil their findings beginning on Thursday, June 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

After doubling down on his earlier tweets, Del Rio had a change of heart…a couple of hours later.
