With so much at stake, the St. Louis Cardinals should ‘go for it’ at the trade deadline.

Fansided’s MLB Insider Robert Murray reported in his weekly installment of The Baseball Insiders with Mark Carman that the St. Louis Cardinals should absolutely go for it.

Murray said the Cardinals should “go for it” at the trade deadline because even after much struggle, the team still remains on the hunt. Murray noted Nolan Arenado has had recent struggles after a strong start. He noted Tyler O’Neill has not performed up to the standard he did last season. The team’s young. ace-apparent Jack Flaherty is making his way back from injury.

“If they add another top of the rotation guy or they add a nice bullpen piece and then you have Arenado bounce back … and then the return of Jack, You have a pretty frickin’ good team,” Murray said.

Murray said he believes Cardinals president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak should definitely consider parting ways with some of the organization’s top prospects, specifically Nolan Gorman and Matthew Liberatore, in order to obtain a top of the rotation starting pitcher or bullpen piece.

Murray specifically noted the Cardinals should make a play for a pitcher they have been connected to in Oakland Athletics starter Frankie Montas.

MLB insider: Cardinals should trade for Frankie Montas

Montas has a record of 2-6 in 12 games started for the A’s. Montas has thrown 70.2 innings and 78 strikeouts. Montas has induced grounders at a 46.5 percent rate this season and his put-away pitch is a sinker that averages 95.5 mph with a 17.7-inch vertical drop and an active spin of 86%.

Montas is definitely the type of pitcher that the Cardinals would like to have in their fold. The Cardinals are attracted to ground ball pitchers who can trust in the defense behind them. With a defense that includes Arenado, O’Neill, Paul Goldschmidt, Tommy Edman, and Harrison Bader, you have a lot to trust that the grounders will get nabbed.

As Murray noted, when you combine the possibility of Arenado getting back on track with Paul Goldschmidt, O’Neill regaining his 2021 form, the return of Flaherty combined with the potential final seasons of Cardinal legends Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols, the team must do all it can to bring home a World Series Championship.

The intersection of the past, present, and future is now for the St. Louis Cardinals. They must make a move to show they are all in for winning and rewarding this amazing group of athletes. Winning with this group will lay a foundation to continue the established winning culture this club has maintained for nearly two decades.
