WWE SummerSlam rumors: John Cena plans in the works?

John Cena will return to WWE on the June 27 episode of Raw, and there is a rumor regarding who he will face at this year’s SummerSlam.

During the June 6 episode of Monday Night Raw, the company announced that John Cena would be making his return to the company on June 27. Given that WWE has a big summer ahead of them with two stadium shows, are there plans for Cena to return to the ring.

Dave Meltzer revealed in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required) that there has been talk of Cena having a match at WWE SummerSlam at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. against Theory, the current United States Champion.

“While this has not been confirmed to us by the company, the talk in wrestling is that it will be Cena vs. Theory at SummerSlam with the idea that working with Cena will bring Theory up to a higher level,” Meltzer wrote, h/t Wrestling Junkie.

Cena potentially facing off against Theory makes sense, considering the two have been interacting with each other recently on social media.

Back in late April, Theory posted a video of his interaction with a young Cena fan, saying that he is the better United States Champion. That elicited a response from the former 16-time world champion.

Then while sitting down for a Q&A on WWE’s official TikTok account earlier this month, Cena said that Theory is his “favorite current WWE superstar” and the WWE superstar “most in need of an Attitude Adjustment.”

Theory has had quite the run since making his return to the main roster in the past year. He paired alongside Mr. McMahon in a mentorship storyline, faced off against Pat McAfee at WrestleMania 38, and defeated Finn Balor to win the United States Championship on the Apr. 18 episode of Raw.

Cena made his return to the company last summer, leading to a huge match with Universal Champion Roman Reigns at WWE SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Reigns defeated Cena in the main event of the show.
