The Tampa Bay Lightning are heading to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third consecutive year following their 2-1 Game 6 win over the New York Rangers.
The Tampa Bay Lightning looked to be in a bad place following the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals, as they lost both to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. But then, the momentum in the series shift in Game 3 on a game-winning goal by Ondrej Palat with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Tampa took the next two games and had the chance to clinch their third trip to the Stanley Cup Final in consecutive years.
On Saturday, June 11, the Lightning defeated the Rangers 2-1 in Game 6 to win the Eastern Conference Championship for the third consecutive year. Now, they take on the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Finals.
For those wondering how Twitter reacted to Game 6, we have you covered.
Twitter reacts to the Lightning and Rangers in Game 6
The Lightning were relentless throughout Game 6, as they dominated the shots on goal total. They were able to take a 1-0 lead midway through the second period on a goal by Steven Stamkos.
With Rangers fans expecting the worst heading into the third period, they were pleasantly surprised after seeing Frank Vatrano put the puck past Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiey to tie things up with less than seven minutes remaining. The Rangers could not even enjoy the hope of turning the tide, because Stamkos scored 21-seconds later to help Tampa take a 2-1 lead.
Now, the Lightning are looking to become the first team to three-peat as Stanley Cup Champions since the New York Islanders won four in a row from 1980-83. But they face a challenge in the Avalanche, who know how to score goals at will, and who made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in just 14 games.
As for the Rangers, they will remember this run to the Eastern Conference Finals. It is still a young team, and they have the chance to build off of this run in the offseason.
