Edgar Berlanga is damaged goods after he bit and headbutted Roamer Alexis Angulo, yet, he somehow received the decision victory.
Edgar Berlanga was in rough shape after 10 rounds at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. His opponent, Roamer Alexis Angulo, bloodied his nose and drew blood from his mouth on June 11. Yet, the judges unanimously awarded the bout to Berlanga.
What was supposed to be a showcase bout for Top Rank fighter Berlanga ended as an embarrassment, even though Berlanga won the fight. It’s hard to fathom how that’s possible, but the night was a total pyrrhic victory for Berlanga.
Once upon a time, Berlanga was undefeated, having gone 16-0 with 16 KOs. However, starting in 2021, the super middleweight boxer from Brooklyn, NY, looked mortal.
Berlanga’s KO streak ended against Demond Nicholson in 2021 as he won a unanimous decision. Next, he suffered a torn biceps muscle against Marcelo Esteban Coceres and had another subpar performance against Steve Rolls in March.
Berlanga was supposed to right the ship against Angulo. The Puerto Rican fighter had all the fans in his corner, but Angulo got the better of Berlanga even though Berlanga was awarded the win.
Things started poorly for Berlanga as the 38-year-old Angulo showed no fear in backing him up. Berlanga is a knockout puncher, but Angulo showed him no respect.

Berlanga resorted to boxing on the back foot and did a solid job for the first several rounds, but Angulo’s pressure broke Berlanaga down.
Blood flowed from Berlanga’s nose in round 3. A few rounds later, Berlanga’s mouth hung open, cradling a pool of blood. Angulo bullied Berlanga for the entire boxing bout and caused physical damage while ending the fight with a clean face.
The most shocking moment of the contest came in round 7 when Berlanga tried to bite Angulo on the neck while in the clinch. The referee missed the attempted bite, even though Angulo complained of it at the time.
Berlanga was frustrated that Angulo was winning the fight. His frustrations came out again after the final bell in round 10. Berlanga and Angulo were face to face, and Berlanga tried to headbutt Angulo. Fortunately, he missed, but the referee again didn’t do anything to admonish Berlanga,
The judges returned two scores of 99-91 and one of 98-92 for Berlanga. Angulo did enough to win, but the judges inexplicably sided with Berlanga. Angulo controlled the battle, but the damaged Berlanga got the win.
Berlanga is undefeated, but his stock took a massive hit. He’s miles away from being a contender, and his lack of sportsmanship could permanently injure his reputation.
