St. Louis Cardinals trade target to avoid: Madison Bumgarner

Over the years, Bumgarner has proven to be an innings-eating workhorse with a similar ethic to Adam Wainwright. While that sounds like an appealing profile to any club seeking out pitching this season, Bumgarner’s volatile personality may provide a pause in bringing him into an environment where everyone appears to gel so well.

Bumgarner’s season thus far puts a bit of a hitch in the thought of actually taking him on. With a record of 2-6 over 13 games and 64.1 innings. He has an ERA of 3.50, has walked 22, given up 30 runs, 25 earned runs, and 11 home runs. He does have 45 strikeouts on the season.

He has been in the majors for over 11 seasons. He is an experienced veteran arm. MadBum’s current deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks is a five-year deal worth $85 million that expires in 2024, making him a free agent in 2025.

While the Cardinals need pitching, their current chemistry is so good. What would the D-backs ask for in exchange for Bumgarner? Losing a well-liked player or clubhouse favorite could provide a hit on a team’s chemistry. Furthermore, would Bumgarner mix with the current roster?  While he would be an interesting arm to add to this club, the price tag could prove too high.
