Should Steph Curry win Finals MVP even if the Warriors lose?

Regardless of who wins the NBA Finals, should the NBA MVP award go to Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry anyway?

The 2022 NBA Finals is tied between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics. With the series nearing its conclusion, the talk regarding who should win the NBA Finals MVP award will only increase. One name that has received buzz even prior to the start of the series is Warriors star Steph Curry.

Even if the Warriors lose to the Celtics in the Finals, should the MVP award go to Curry anyway? John Hollinger of The Athletic made the case on why this should happen.

“…Steph Curry should be the NBA Finals MVP win or lose,” writes Hollinger. “He’s been that much better than everyone else. A losing player hasn’t won the award since Jerry West in 1969, but it’s hard to imagine a more clear case for breaking that half-century of tradition.”

It is crazy that it has been over 50 years since a player on the losing team of the NBA Finals won MVP award. As Hollinger points out, West won the award after averaging 37.9 points, 7.4 assists and 4.7 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics won the NBA Finals in seven games.

Curry has played at a high level through the first four games of this Finals against Boston. Thus far, Curry has scored the most points by a player on either team in each game! On average, Curry has put up 34.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists. And he is doing so against a great Celtics defense.

There was also history made by Curry so far in this year’s NBA Finals. Curry is the first player in NBA history to make five three-point shots in four consecutive NBA Finals games. Not only that, but he is the only player to average over 30-points while shooting at least 50-percent from the field and 45-percent from the three-point line through the first four games of the Finals!

Whether it is the Warriors or Celtics who are holding up the Larry O’Brien trophy, Curry should get serious consideration to win the NBA Finals MVP for the first time in his career.
