Versatile St. Louis Cardinals shortstop/second baseman Tommy Edman is making a clear-cut case for the MLB All-Star team in 2022.

Ten weeks in, MLB players across the league are making their cases for All-Star team qualification as they play their way through June. Although voting has been open since June 8, the St. Louis Cardinals have not missed any opportunity to remind fans that shortstop Tommy Edman is a must on this year’s ballot.

“Short, second, doesn’t matter,” effused the announcer as Edman leapt into the air for an impressive out. Defensive plays like this bolster the case for Edman on this year’s All-Star roster, but Edman also has something to offer on the offensive side of the ball.

In a close match versus the Cincinnati Reds, Edman won the Cardinals the game in the first-ever walk-off homer of his career — one that measured an exit velocity of 104.4 MPH, per Katie Woo.

Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright described Edman as “everyone’s favorite player,” and it’s hard to argue with Wainwright: Edman is beloved by his teammates and fans, which is why he’s someone for Cardinals fans to champion for the MLB All-Star Game this July.

Cardinals fans need to rally to make Tommy Edman an All-Star player

It’s important to note that Edman is listed as an NL shortstop rather than a second baseman, even though the multitalented infielder has played second throughout this season and won a Gold Glove at second in 2021.

The move to shortstop has allowed Nolan Gorman to flourish, but it’s also allowed Edman to excel at short. Already he’s making a strong case for All-Star contention in a stacked category that includes Francisco Lindor, Dansby Swanson and Trea Turner. Despite the big names featured in this category, it’s Edman who is currently leading MLB position players in WAR right now. Edman also leads the league in assists with 178.

“When you think of the Cardinals, you think of a player like Tommy Edman,” Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado said of Edman in May. Now, Cards fans have a chance to support the heart and soul of the team by making him an All-Star.
