Phil Mickelson isn’t the only golfer to have caused a stir by joining LIV Golf. Is Dustin Johnson playing in the 2022 US Open Championship?

While Phil Mickelson may be the most well-known golfer to have joined LIV Golf, he’s not the only one. Dustin Johnson abandoned the PGA Tour as well and played in the inaugural LIV Golf event last week in London.

But, Johnson, Mickelson, and several others have already resigned from the PGA Tour or been suspended from PGA events are eligible to play in this week’s US Open.

Why is Dustin Johnson able to play in the 2022 US Open?

Dustin Johnson received a reported $150M just to join LIV. That’s a huge chunk of change considering his career-earnings while on the PGA Tour come out to little more than $74M per Spotrac.

Johnson announced his resignation from the PGA Tour last week and will instead compete in the remaining seven events with LIV Golf, the next of which will be in two weeks at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Oregon.

But because the US Open is presented by the USGA and not the PGA, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, and others who joined LIV Golf will be permitted to play in the tournament this week.

Johnson is a two-time major champion. The 37-year-old won the 2016 US Open at Oakmont and the 2020 Masters. DJ ranks third all-time in career earnings behind only Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

While the rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will be something to watch in the future, it will not dictate which players are eligible to play at the 2022 US Open. Dustin Johnson will be teeing it up on Thursday afternoon alongside Webb Simpson and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick.
