Austin Riley celebrates second homer with iconic homage to MLB legend

Braves third baseman Austin Riley did one better than a bat flip after hitting a home run against the Nationals and waving the bat like Gary Sheffield.

Gary Sheffield had one of the most memorable batting stances in MLB history.

Inadvertently or not, Austin Riley appeared to pay homage to it on Wednesday night against the Nationals.

Riley added to the Braves‘ big lead in the eighth inning with a two-run home run. As he started to run the bases, he held onto the bat, wiggling it in a way that had people thinking about Sheffield.

That was Riley’s second home run of the night after another two-run bomb that went 441 feet in the seventh.

Sheffield’s son gave his stamp of approval to the reference.

A good bat flip is always entertaining but the Sheffield bat wiggle is now up there for post-home run celebrations.

Atlanta has plenty to celebrate right now. The win on Wednesday night extended their winning streak to 14 games. They haven’t lost in the month of June, sweeping four different series along the way.

The road trip continues on Friday against the Cubs in Chicago. A 15th straight win would tie the franchise record for consecutive victories set in 2000.

Along with Riley’s big night, the Braves got another huge outing from stand-in second baseman Orlando Arcia. He hit a home run in the eighth and drove in the opening run of the game on an infield single in the second inning. The night before he hit a homer, drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and scored a run himself.
