Can LIV Golf players play in The Open Championship?
By Drew Koch
The Open Championship, commonly referred to as the British Open, is about a month away. Will we see LIV Golf players in this year’s British Open?
LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman and the rebellious band of former PGA Tour professionals have certainly given the golf world something to talk about.
While several LIV golfers have either resigned from the PGA or been suspended, they’ll still be part of this year’s US Open from The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. But what about the British Open in July?
Can LIV Golf players play in the British Open?
The USGA, last week, came out in favor of allowing LIV Golf players to compete in the 2022 US Open. Since the US Open is not a PGA Tour event, it stands to reason that those golfers who joined LIV Golf are allowed to play in this week’s tournament.
When it comes to The Open Championship, oftentimes called the British Open, the R&A (the governing body which oversees The Open Championship) have yet to comment on whether or not players from LIV Golf will be eligible to play.
Which PGA Tour players have gone to LIV Golf?
Several big names have left the PGA Tour in favor of joining LIV Golf. Phil Mickelson the most recognizable name. The six-time major champion signed a massive deal to join the new golf league.
Joining Mickelson are former world’s No. 1-ranked golfer Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, and Bryson DeChambeau. Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood are also part of LIV Golf.
The Open Championship is roughly a month away. The R&A will have to make an official decision sooner rather than later. Perhaps they’ll see how things work out this week at Brookline before deciding whether or not to allow those who’ve joined LIV Golf to participate in the British Open.
