US Open rumors: Jordan Spieth leaves practice, unsure of playing status
Jordan Spieth is one of the favorites and a trendy pick for the 2022 US Open but a rumored illness could have his playing status in doubt.
The 2022 US Open is offering so much to talk about, from the LIV Golf defectors now mingling with the PGA Tour stalwarts to Rory McIlroy trying to recapture major championship glory to Jon Rahm looking to defend his title and much more. Yet, when you look around betting circles, it won’t take long to find people loving Jordan Spieth’s chances at The Country Club.
For a course that will require ball-striking accuracy and creativity, it’s no shock that Spieth, particularly with this year’s improvement with the driver, is under heavy consideration for many. Which is why it’s all the more concerning with the rumblings at Brookline on Wednesday.
According to reports from the ground, Spieth left the range because he was not feeling well and doesn’t plan to come back on Wednesday. Moreover, Sirius XM’s Colt Knost said Spieth told him he was “not good” in terms of how he was feeling. And most concerning of all, the three-time major winner said he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to play on Thursday for the first round.
Jordan Spieth’s US Open status in doubt after leaving practice with illness
Update, 6:18 p.m. ET – According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, Spieth had a stomach bug but, after taking it easy on Wednesday, says he’s a go for Thursday’s first round.
Just to get out in front of this, we have heard nothing from Spieth directly about the matter or from the USGA regarding his status for the 122nd US Open. That doesn’t make this any less worrisome, however.
Over the years, we’ve certainly seen guys battle through illnesses to play, particularly at an even like a major championship. While that’s the case, though, we’ve just as often seen it affect the players’ performance in those events.
For someone like Spieth who fits the bill of a player who could succeed at The Country Club and try to add a second US Open trophy to his résumé, the fact that he’s feeling bad enough to cut his range session and practice for the day short is not a good sign.
This is undoubtedly a situation that will need to be monitored over the next 24 hours as it seems that Jordan Spieth could either not play this event or, at the least, not be at 100 percent when he puts a tee in the ground on Thursday.
