Adam Scott’s 3-yard shot shows how brutal US Open can be at Brookline
By Drew Koch
The US Open is the the ultimate test for the world’s best golfers. Adam Scott found that out the hard way on the 8th hole during his opening round.
The US Open hasn’t taken place at The Country Club at Brookline since Curtis Strange won the first of his two major championships with a playoff victory over two-time Masters’ champion Nick Faldo back in 1988.
With the return of golf’s ultimate test to Brookline comes unfair lies, cavernous rough, and tricky pin placements. Adam Scott found out the hard way just how merciless this course can be with his approach shot on No. 8 during the first-round of play on Thursday morning.
Adam Scott’s 3-yard shot shows how brutal US Open can be at Brookline
Adam Scott, who’s playing alongside 2015 US Open champion Jordan Spieth, hit his third shot into the green at the 549-yard 8th. Scott’s approach landed on the front-side of the green, but it didn’t stay there for long.
Scott was sitting about 60 yards from the hole on his third shot, but coming up short cost the Australian golfer big time. As Scott looked on in disbelief, his ball rolled all the way back down to nearly the same distance that he had hit it from.

Scott’s third shot travelled a grand total of three yards, as his fourth shot was 57 yards from the cup. Thankfully for Adam Scott, he was able to knock it much closer the second time and escaped the 8th hole with a par.
Scott’s shot at No. 8 will not be the only one that seems to defy logic this week. Those who take to the course in the 122nd US Open will have to have a masterful short-game in order to overcome the adversity and hardships that are sure to await them at Brookline.
