WWE rumors: Randy Orton injury could be bad news for summer plans
By Scott Rogust
According to a report from Fightful Select, Randy Orton is feared to be sidelined for the remainder of 2022 due to a back injury.
WWE has two huge stadium shows planned for the summer, with the first being SummerSlam at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. on June 30. The reported plans for the show were Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending against Randy Orton. That match seems to be in danger of even happening.
According to Fightful Select (subscription required), WWE fears that Orton will be sidelined for the remainder of the year due to a back injury. The outlet notes that Orton’s injury has “gotten progressively worse,” and that the company is afraid that he may need to undergo surgery.
Fightful also notes that Orton is not factored into creative plans at the time of their report.
WWE fears Randy Orton could miss rest of 2022 due to injury
This is just the latest bad injury news for WWE. Cody Rhodes is sidelined after fully tearing his pectoral muscle. Even with the injury, Rhodes still wrestled his scheduled Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins at the June 5 premium live event. Rhodes has since undergone surgery, and WWE announced that he will be sidelined for nine months.
After WrestleMania 38, Orton and his RK-Bro tag team partner, Riddle, entered a feud with Reigns’ Bloodline faction that includes the Uso’s (Jimmy and Jey). On the May 20 episode of SmackDown, RK-Bro and the Uso’s battled in a Tag Team Championship unification match. The Uso’s won with help from Reigns, and the trio attacked Orton and Riddle post-match. Orton has not been on television since.
Now, Riddle is in a feud with Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, which will take place on the June 17 episode of SmackDown.
Orton is one of WWE’s most popular stars with the fanbase. What WWE has in store for Reigns for SummerSlam remains to be seen. There is over a month until the big show in Nashville, so we should find out once we get closer to that premium live event.
