How many rounds are in the 2022 NBA Draft?
By John Buhler
The 2022 NBA Draft will be underway at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Thursday, June 23.
With the 2022 NBA Finals in the books after the Golden State Warriors took care of business vs. the Boston Celtics in six games, the basketball world now turns its attention to the 2022 NBA Draft.
The draft order has been set with the lottery having been held a few weeks back. The Orlando Magic will have the No. 1 overall selection, followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Houston Rockets, the Sacramento Kings and the Detroit Pistons to round out the top five. Perhaps one of these bottom-feeding franchises will be able to draft their next superstar to get out of this mess?
Here is how many rounds and how many overall selections will be made in the 2022 NBA Draft.
2022 NBA Draft: How many rounds are there and how many picks will be made?
As it is every year, the 2022 NBA Draft will have two rounds worth of selections. Usually, each round consists of 30 picks, so basically one per team, in theory. However, two franchises are forfeiting second-round picks because of tampering: The Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. Thus, there will only be 58 picks in this year’s draft. There are no compensatory picks to be had.
While there is no true bonafide, gotta-have-him No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, there should be several All-Star caliber players coming off the board in the lottery portion. Some of the top players in this year’s draft include Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Duke’s Paolo Banchero, Iowa’s Keegan Murray, Purdue’s Jaden Ivey and Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr. All five could be the first five guys taken.
As far as teams to watch in this year’s draft, definitely keep an eye on Oklahoma City. Thunder general manager Sam Presti has accumulated so many assets for this draft, it is not even funny. Oklahoma City has four picks in this draft, including three in the first round. This could be a draft where the rebuilding Thunder position themselves to be a juggernaut in the seasons to follow.
May your favorite team’s front office pick the right player for the franchise, now and in the future.
