2. Red Sox trade target on the Cubs: David Robertson

David Robertson might be the best closer available at this year’s trade deadline. Tell that to someone a year ago and they might never believe it. He has turned back the clock this season as the last line of defense out of the Cubs bullpen. Every team in need of a relief pitcher should consider him whether it’s for the final three outs or earlier.

The Red Sox have some major questions at the closer spot. Matt Strahm has taken over the duties but the leash is short. A poor stretch could have someone else taking over. Outside of the organization, Robertson feels like a fine choice for those final outs.

The Boston bullpen has pitched relatively well this season outside of Matt Barnes’ performance before landing on the IL. A few players look like they might be outperforming expectations. Given this, the Red Sox shouldn’t just roll with what they already have.

Robertson will be more than available in trade talks. The Cubs gave him a chance to pitch again and he has made the most of it. Now it’s their chance to take advantage of his terrific start and flip him for some future help. The Cubs, as much as they would hate to admit it, are a few years away from being a serious contender again.
