Watch: Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddie emotionally kisses 18th hole flag after US Open win
After Matt Fitzpatrick secured his US Open win, his caddie Billy Foster delivered one of the indelible images from The Country Club on the 18th green.
Winning the US Open was obviously an emotional moment for Matt Fitzpatrick, so much so that he truthfully appeared in shock for the first part of the celebration on the 18th hole at The Country Club as the Brookline crowd roared around him while friends and family flocked.
As emotional as it was for him, though, it may have been even more so for his caddie, Billy Foster.
Foster has long been one of the most respected caddies on the PGA Tour and has been on the bag for numerous big-name players over the course of the past 40 years. However, prior to Sunday, he’d never been on the bag for a major championship win.
So when Fitzpatrick changed that, Foster was clearly ready to soak it all in.

While Fitzpatrick ran to greet his family first, Foster made a beeline for the flag at the 18th hole, looking at it, taking it in his hand, and emotionally kissing it before taking it, as is customary for the winning caddie at a major championship.
That’s the type of lasting image that makes golf so special.
Foster’s kiss with the flag is reminiscent of Hideki Matsuyama’s caddie at the 2021 Masters when, following the Japanese star’s victory, he turned on the 18th green and bowed to the course as a sign of respect.
Many congratulations will be handed out to Fitzpatrick and deservedly so. But congratulations to Foster as well. This has been a long time coming for him over four decades and it’s truly sentimental to see him soak in the moment.
