Former Braves pitcher blasts fans planning to boo Freddie Freeman in return to Atlanta
Will Braves fans boo Freddie Freeman when he makes his return to Atlanta? Former ATL pitcher Alex Wood thinks that idea is insane.
For the first time since signing with the Dodgers, Freddie Freeman will return to Truist Park to face his former team at the end of this week.
Given the way the Braves legend parted ways with Atlanta, some have wondered what kind of reception he will receive.
At least one former Atlanta player thinks anything less than a warm welcome is unthinkable.
Alex Wood blasts the idea of Braves fans booing Freddie Freeman
“The fact that this is even a question is literally the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my entire life,” Alex Wood tweeted in response to a Twitter poll asking if Freeman will be booed. “One of the best in franchise history, a pillar of the Atlanta community and potential future HOF. Real Braves fans should be laughing at this.”
The fans seem to agree with Wood on this one. With 4,700 votes on the poll, just 25 percent thought Freeman would get booed. The majority don’t expect it to happen.
Wood started his career with the Braves, pitching in Atlanta from 2013 to 2015 when he was traded to the Dodgers.
Freeman is now in Los Angeles himself with the Dodgers and his Braves legacy really has no business being questioned. He helped the franchise win the World Series in 2021 to cap 12 years of loyal service.
Some fans may not have liked the way Freeman negotiated with the franchise on a new contract. Others blame management for not doing everything it took to keep Freeman in place. It doesn’t really matter which side you fall on. Even those who think the player asked for too much should recognize his massive contributions to the organization and give him an ovation.
The Braves and Dodgers will meet for a three-game series beginning on Friday, June 24. The Dodgers took the earlier series in Los Angeles 2-1 with Freeman hitting two home runs.
