Steve Young and Jerry Rice

Steve Young stepped into the starting job in San Francisco with heavy expectations on his shoulders and he didn’t disappoint, helming one of the most prolific offenses the NFL had seen up to that point.

He did so with a match-made-in-heaven connection to Jerry Rice, who solidified his legacy by catching passes from yet another all-time great quarterback.

The two won just one Super Bowl but they were an undeniably dominant force. Rice set the NFL record for single-season yards with Young in 1995 with 1,848 yards, a mark that stood until 2012.

Joe Montana and Jerry Rice

Before Young and Rice embarked on their successful run together, Joe Montana and Rice had already formed the greatest partnership in NFL history.

Montana and Rice won two Super Bowls together and were perennial Pro Bowlers. The quarterback was uber-successful even before the receiver turned up. The receiver was uber-successful even after the quarterback left. As individuals, they are arguably and definitively the greatest to ever play their respective positions. And they made each other better.
