Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith revealed that his daughter underwent surgery to remove brain tumor.
Former Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith revealed in an Instagram post on June 25 that his daughter and youngest child, Sloane, underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Smith detailed that Sloane was rushed to the emergency room on May 10 with stroke-like symptoms. After receiving an MRI, doctors revealed that Sloane had a large brain tumor that required an emergency craniotomy, a procedure that required 10-hours. Smith then revealed that the neurosurgeons at Stanford Children’s Health were able to remove 100-percent of the tumor.

Alex Smith reveals daughter had surgery to remove rare brain tumor
Smith then said in his post that his daughter had a rare malignant tumor, and that they are waiting on more tests and consulting with doctors “to decide the best path forward.”
“Sloane—in her true form—bounced back from brain surgery like a rockstar! She didn’t skip a beat,” wrote Smith. “After weeks of waiting on pathology, we learned that Sloane’s tumor is a very rare malignant tumor with very few documented cases—without a clear road map for treatment. We are currently awaiting more tests and gathering as many opinions as we can from doctors across the country to decide the best path forward. We wish this were easy, clear-cut and someone gave us a how-to guide. It’s anything but that.
“All we know is what is most important—and that’s SLOANE. She has healed from surgery. Back to her bubbly self. Singing, dancing, laughing and feeling good.”
Smith, the former first-overall pick by the 49ers in 2005, last played in the NFL in 2020 for Washington. That was the very year that Smith returned from a leg injury suffered the year prior. Smith was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year for the 2020 season.
After the 2020 campaign, Smith announced his retirement from the NFL after 16 seasons.
