The Washington Commanders signed star wide receiver Terry McLaurin to a three-year contract extension. Here are three teams that blew it by not trading for him.
In the year 2022, the top wide receivers in the NFL have received lucrative contracts, whether that was from the team they were originally on, or from their new organization. Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, A.J. Brown, and Tyreek Hill are just some of the wideouts who got new deals.
On Tuesday, June 27, the Washington Commanders and Terry McLaurin agreed to terms on a three-year, $71 million contract extension, keeping him on the team through the 2025 season and avoid him hitting free agency next year.
With that, fans instantly think of what could have been. In this case, “what if my team was able to trade for McLaurin?” Here are three teams that should have tried their best to negotiate a trade and acquire McLaurin to add to their wide receiver corps.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
When you are a consistent Super Bowl contender, you always make moves to get better. The Kansas City Chiefs fit the bill.
The Chiefs shockingly made the decision to trade Tyreek Hill after contract negotiations stalled out. He was dealt to the Miami Dolphins and signed a four-year $120 million contract. Losing the speed that Hill provided on the field is huge for the Chiefs.
Kansas City did make some solid moves this offseason to bolster their passing attack. They signed former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Green Bay Packers wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency, while drafting Western Michigan’s Skyy Moore in the second-round of the NFL Draft.
Given that this is the Chiefs, they can easily move on from draft capital to bring in a receiver like McLaurin, who had back-to-back 1,000-receiving yard seasons with the quarterbacks he had throwing to him.
