The New York Mets announced they pushed back Max Scherzer’s rehab start by a day, putting his status for the upcoming series against the Atlanta Braves in question.

The New York Mets managed to have the best record in the National League even without two of their top starting pitchers, one of them being Max Scherzer. He left a start back in May after suffering an oblique injury but had made a rehab start recently, pushing himself closer to a return.

But on Tuesday, June 27, Mets manager Buck Showalter said that the team had pushed Scherzer’s second scheduled rehab start that night until Wednesday with Double-A Binghamton. Showalter said that the decision was made to give Scherzer an extra day of rest.

Max Scherzer’s scheduled rehab start pushed back

Mets fans will be keeping a keen eye on how Scherzer performs and feels during his rehab start on June 28. When looking at their schedule, they have a pivotal series against the Atlanta Braves from July 11-13, who have been surging up the NL East standings and sit five games behind the Mets for first entering Tuesday night.

Prior to straining his oblique, Scherzer recorded a 2.54 ERA, a 0.946 WHIP, 59 strikeouts and 11 walks through eight starts (49.2 innings).

Getting back Scherzer will, obviously, provide a huge boost to the Mets pitching staff when he does return. It will just be a matter of when he returns, which the fanbase hopes will be for or before the Braves series.
