Dejounte Murray trade details: Hawks pair Spurs star with Trae Young
Dejounte Murray has been traded to the Hawks to pair with Trae Young but the Spurs are getting quite a bit of compensation in return.
Perhaps never more in the postseason, it was clear that the Atlanta Hawks needed to do something this offseason to reach another level with the roster around star guard Trae Young.
On Wednesday just before the start of the new league year, the franchise was able to accomplish exactly that with a blockbuster trade.
The Hawks have traded with the San Antonio Spurs for another star guard to pair with Young, Dejounte Murray.
Dejounte Murray trade details: Hawks get star guard, Spurs get trove of picks
As you’d surely expect, the Hawks aren’t getting Murray at any type of a discount. As reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Atlanta will send Danilo Gallinari and three first-round picks, as well as a potential 2026 pick swap, to the Spurs in the deal.
Murray has emerged as a true star for the Spurs in recent years. In 68 games last year, the Washington product averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. His two-way ability in addition to his diversified playmaking should make things dangerous in Atlanta in the best possible way.
What remains to be seen is if the Hawks have any other big moves coming down the pipeline this offseason. There have been persistent rumors about the club dealing big man John Collins heading into the 2022-23 campaign and free agency still looms. After a trade such as this one, though, you have to believe this is just the first move of several.
