The Chicago Cubs could be a threat to the Mets to sign Jacob deGrom

The Chicago Cubs have definitely taken a step (or more) backward in the last calendar year as they traded Joc Pederson, Craig Kimbrel, Javier Báez, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo (among others) at last year’s trade deadline.

Despite not playing well this year (on pace for 66-96 season), they have shown that they are willing to spend money. This past offseason, they signed former New York Mets starting pitcher Marcus Stroman to a three-year deal and Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki to a five-year deal.

Even with those additions, the Cubs only have a payroll of $150 million, according to Spotrac. On Opening Day in 2019, their payroll was more than $208 million so they could very easily afford deGrom.

The need is also there for the Cubs. Entering Sunday, their starting pitching staff had an ERA of 5.01, which was 26th in baseball and they are tied for 27th in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) at 2.6.

The Cubs have the motive and the means to do it so if they have the opportunity to sign Jacob deGrom, don’t be surprised if they pounce on him.
