Red Sox trolled extremely hard by Yankees, ESPN with Fenway Park ad
By Tim Boyle
The Boston Red Sox may feel like they’re being trolled by the New York Yankees because of the new ESPN advertisement outside of Fenway Park.
It’s not bulletin board material. What this can be considered is billboard material. Outside of Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, an appearance by Derek Jeter was made.
The former New York Yankees shortstop was looking a little flat. That’s because his appearance outside of Fenway Park came in the form of a billboard advertisement for the upcoming ESPN documentary all about Jeter.
The Red Sox got trolled hard by the Yankees and ESPN with this promotional billboard
Is there a better rivalry in North American sports than the Red Sox and Yankees? It has lasted over 100 years. It is baseball bitterness at its best. The two cities they represent fuel it further. Add in the fact that one utterly dominated the other for decades and we have ourselves a rivalry that needs no fodder to burn brightly.
The placement of this billboard just outside of Fenway Park couldn’t have been a mistake. Even those who faintly follow baseball know the spark this would cause. Jeter is to the Red Sox what Darth Vader is to the Resistance.
Or, if you ask a New Yorker, he’s Princess Leia to their Evil Empire.
Advertisements need to appear everywhere. Whether we’re driving, watching a video, or staring down at the diner placement in front of us at 3 a.m., we’re going to see something advertised to us. Sometimes, those advertisements work. In cases like this, ESPN might have a hard time convincing anyone who sees this to watch a seven-part documentary about one of the greatest villains in Boston sports history.
Whether intentional or not, it will be impossible for Red Sox fans to ignore. Jeter is one of the most well-known baseball players of the last 25 years. His name. His face. His number. They’re all recognizable.
The two teams will clash later this week beginning on Thursday, July 7. With Jeter looking on, can the Yankees remind the Red Sox who leads MLB in wins or will Boston be able to wipe the grin off of billboard Jeter’s face?
