Gennadiy Golovkin disappointed on how Canelo handled loss to Bivol
While speaking to FanSided, Gennadiy Golovkin explained his disappointment with how Canelo Alvarez handled losing to Dmitry Bivol.
In the build-up to their trilogy boxing bout, Canelo Alvarez has had plenty of negative things to say about Gennadiy Golovkin. Now, it’s Golovkin’s turn.
Golovkin and Alvarez fight for the third time at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sept. 17. They fought to a draw in 2017, but Alvarez was awarded the majority decision in their 2018 rematch.
Since their first fight, there has been a great deal of tension between Golovkin and Alvarez. Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol before their second bout. He attributed the positive test to tainted meat, but Golovkin was critical of Alvarez’s positive test.
Golovkin’s comments stuck with Alvarez, who hasn’t had many nice things to say about Golovkin since. He recently expressed his strong dislike for Golovkin to FanSided.
“I think [I dislike] Golovkin a little more because Caleb Plant, he’s a person who tells you what he thinks,” Alvarez said to FanSided. “He tells you the truth, right? Golovkin, he tries to pretend to be other person, and he’s not. He don’t have balls. So, I hate that kind of people more.”
Alvarez is the favorite over Golovkin, but the odds would be even wider if Alvarez didn’t lose to Dmitry Bivol in May. Bivol successfully defended his WBA light heavyweight title against Alvarez by unanimous decision.
Alvarez stated in the post-fight presser that he thought he deserved the victory against Bivol. Golovkin seized on those remarks when discussing his trilogy bout against Alvarez with FanSided.

“I did not watch the entire fight, just the highlights,” Golovkin said to FanSided through an interpreter. “I saw that Dmitry Bivol prevailed. When Canelo reacted to the outcome of the fight, I feel disappointed with him. Because if you’re a professional boxer, you know boxing. You know the insides of the sport.
“How can you react like that? How can you believe that you won the fight with the loss of just one or two rounds? How can you say that when a lot of people follow you, a lot of people take interest in you. That’s just not fair. And I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate Dmitry Bivol again on his victory.”
Most pundits and fans that watched Alvarez vs. Bivol saw the fight the same way as the judges. Many believed that Bivol deserved to win by more than a 115-113 margin, which all three judges had as their card.
Golovkin’s statement is the latest in the back and forth between Alvarez and Bivol and will likely give Alvarez another reason to dislike Golovkin.
Going into his third bout with Alvarez, Golovkin isn’t too concerned with what transpired between them in the ring in the past. They are different fighters today than they were then, according to Golovkin.
“Well, it was a long time ago,” Golovkin said. “A lot has changed since, and of course, you need to take into consideration best moments to see how you can capitalize on that. But on the other hand, we are boxers of that caliber that don’t make the same mistakes again, so it would be difficult just to get a blueprint based on the previous fight.”
The first two contests were incredibly competitive. Expect another war between Golovkin and Alvarez on Sept. 17.
