5 free agency destinations for Jacob deGrom: New York Yankees

What’s to stop the New York Yankees from entering the Jacob deGrom rumors sweepstakes other than the front office? They are an organization that should never cease to go over the luxury tax. If they come up short in pursuit of a World Series in 2022, you better believe they’ll be out for vengeance in the offseason. This means searching every henhouse, doghouse, outhouse, and geographical rival for free agents they can pluck away.

The Yankees already do have Aaron Judge to worry about so the odds are stacked against them outmatching the Mets in how much they are willing to pay deGrom. Plus, with Gerrit Cole already making generational wealth in the rotation, the need for him isn’t quite there.

Nonetheless, the Yankees are a team that can never be counted out of any sweepstakes. This includes deGrom—a man who is easily one of the greatest pitchers in New York baseball history.

As painful as signing with the Braves might be, at least there is an escape. By staying in New York, there is no escape. Yankees fans living next door to Mets loyalists will have something to gloat about every fifth day.

deGrom can make the Mets pay in the standings as a member of the Braves. On the Yankees, it’s pain for the soul.
