The New York Mets may be looking to add a bat or two in the coming weeks. Which players won’t be on New York’s roster after the MLB trade deadline?

The New York Mets will be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. Despite being one of the best teams in the National League, one could argue that New York could use help in the bullpen, the starting rotation, and certainly their lineup.

The Mets will have some key players returning to the roster very soon. Max Scherzer just got back on Tuesday and Jacob deGrom shouldn’t be that far behind. Chris Bassitt should be back very soon as well.

New York will also be in the market for another power bat as the trade deadline approaches. With only so many roster spots available, which players won’t be on the Mets roster after Aug. 2?

1. Dominic Smith won’t be on the Mets roster past the trade deadline

Dominic Smith‘s name came up constantly throughout the offseason as a potential trade candidate. Given that Smith doesn’t have the best track record, the Mets never received much interest in the left-handed hitting outfielder.

Smith holds a small amount of value on the trade market, but the more likely scenario is that the 27-year-old is optioned to Triple-A or perhaps even designated for assignment. Smith signed to a one-year contract worth almost $4M, so it may be more prudent for the Mets to option the slugger rather than part ways all together.

Smith was thought to be part of a one-two punch for New York. Along with the right-handed hitting J.D. Davis, the left-handed Dominic Smith was supposed to platoon at DH. Smith isn’t holding up his end of the bargain, and is likely he’ll be off the Mets roster after the trade deadline passes.
