Red Sox catch heat from Yankees fans for celebrating meaningless home run

New York Yankees fans could not help but notice the Boston Red Sox doing their shopping cart dugout celebration after hitting a home run while down 9-2 in the July 8 game.

The Boston Red Sox hosted the New York Yankees this week for a four-game series, as they looked to catch up to them in the AL East standings. Well, they have not had much luck. After losing 6-5 in the series opener, the Red Sox fell 12-5 to the Yankees on July 8.

Boston was down 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but they were able cut the deficit to 9-4 on solo home runs by second baseman Trevor Story and first baseman Bobby Dalbec.

As is the case when the Red Sox hit a home run, they do their patented cart celebration in the dugout, but that caught the ire of Yankees fans on Twitter.

Yeah, they were not fans about the cart celebration.

Boston were able to pull within four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Rob Refsnyder scored on a groundout by Xander Bogaerts. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, that was the final run they would score for the night.

The Yankees extended their lead on a sacrifice bunt by Marwin Gonzalez in the seventh inning, an RBI double by Gleyber Torres in the eighth, and a bases loaded walk to Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the ninth that allowed Jose Trevino to score.

Boston will look to get their first win of the series on July 9. First pitch begins at 7:15 p.m. ET.
