Robinson Cano and the Atlanta Braves recently agreed to terms on a contract. The first opponent that Cano will see is his former club, the New York Mets.

Robinson Cano was released by the New York Mets earlier this season when rosters were shrunk from 28 players down to 26. Cano latched on with the San Diego Padres, but things didn’t really work out.

Cano appeared in just 12 games for the Friars before being handed his walking papers. The eight-time All-Star hit a paltry .091/.118/.091 during his time in Southern California and was released by the Padres.

But, Cano will receive another chance to right the ship. Without a real left-handed option aside from starting first baseman Matt Olson, the Atlanta Braves decided to take a flier on Robinson Cano. As it happens, the first opponents he’ll see in a Braves uniform will be his old teammates form the Big Apple.

The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets begin a crucial series tonight in the ATL with first-place in the National League East on the line. The Braves trails the division-leading Mets by just a game-and-a-half.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Cano is expected to be activated prior to tonight’s game in Atlanta and could be in the starting lineup against Mets’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer. Cano is thought to be platooning with the right-handed hitting Orlando Arcia at second base.

This could make for some must-see TV tonight. Cano spent the last two-plus season as part of the Mets roster. During that time, Cano posted the lowest OPS of his career outside the 2008 season with the New York Yankees and was suspended for the entire 2021 season for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

To make matters worse for the New York Mets, they’re actually paying the remainder of Cano’s 2022 salary which is north of $20M. The Braves and Cano have a chance to take over the lead in the NL East with a sweep of the Mets at Truist Park this week.
