Cardinals get worst-case injury scenario for Jack Flaherty
The St. Louis Cardinals put pitcher Jack Flaherty on the 60-day IL as his troubles with injury in 2022 stretch on frustratingly.
Cardinals fans hoping to see Jack Flaherty after the All-Star break will be disappointed with the news that dropped on Monday afternoon.
The pitcher who has only been available for three games this year will miss even more time after being placed on the 60-day IL, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
That would put his return to the lineup no early than mid-August.
Jack Flaherty injury update: Cardinals put pitcher on 60-day IL
Flaherty made his first start of the year in June, missing the first few months of the season with shoulder soreness. When he did make it back on the mound things didn’t go well at all. His ERA in just eight innings pitched was 5.63. He had to come out of his third start with shoulder tightness.
Landing on the 15-day IL at that point was definitely a setback, but taking that time to get right and make a return after the All-Star break wasn’t a terrible prospect.
Now knowing that Flaherty needs to be on the 60-day IL, his shoulder issues sound much more worrisome.
Flaherty had an excellent 2021 season, going 9-2 with an ERA of 3.22. St. Louis needs his arm, or to find another option to plug into their lineup.
The Cardinals are still waiting on Steven Matz to return from his stint on the IL. With the trade deadline coming up, it wouldn’t be surprising for STL to look for another starter. The hard part is actually reeling one in.
