Open Championship picks: Expert picks, best bets for St. Andrews
The Open Championship is set for its 150th edition, fittingly at St. Andrews, and we have our Open Championship picks, best bets and more locked in.
It may be incorrectly referred to as the British Open but here it’s time for The Open Championship, the 150th iteration of the major championship. Fittingly for such a monumental occasion, we’re heading to the home of golf and the Old Course at St. Andrews this week for one of the most anticipated tournaments in some time.
Not only will Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, red-hot Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and many more be competing, but it’s also the return of Tiger Woods to the golf course after he skipped the US Open and withdrew after the third round of the PGA Championship. So you could say there is a bit of excitement for Open Championship week.
And what better way to channel that than with our Open Championship picks for the week. We’ve been a bit up and down with our picks but are coming off of a solid week at the Scottish Open, so let’s capitalize on that with a big week at St. Andrews.
We’re breaking down Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20 best bets for the week and then giving out three outright picks to win. These are the Open Championship picks we’re rolling with and that we’re counting on cashing come Sunday after we’ve had our morning coffee.

Open Championship picks: Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, One and Done selections
Top 5 pick for The Open Championship: Jordan Spieth (+400)
I’ve jostled back and forth about how to include Jordan Spieth in my picks for this week and a Top 5 bet feels like the right spot. He disappointed on the back-nine of his final round at the Scottish Open this past week but his creativity and overall form show that he’s made for links golf and has the results at The Open to prove that. His last four appearances resulted in T2, T20, T9 and T2 while also being a former winner. I worry about the late-tournament yips he seems to have, so I’m mitigating that risk by not betting him outright and just to Top 5.
Top 10 pick for The Open Championship: Tony Finau (+400)
This feels like a sneaky pick and I’ve fallen completely in love with it. Tony Finau has started to flash some form recently, albeit with some erratic finishes mixed in. Overall, though, I like seeing a run of T4, T2, missed cut and T13 for Finau coming into The Open, a tournament in which he’s quietly been very good at. He’s finished T15 or better in each of the last three Opens and has two Top 10s in that stretch. This is great value for a player who’s being overlooked.
Top 20 pick for The Open Championship: Max Homa (+225)
If the oddsmakers are going to keep giving out this kind of plus value on Homa, I’m going to keep taking it. In his last six starts worldwide, Homa has finished outside the Top 20 just twice, one of which was a T23. Moreover, we’ve seen a steady improvement in his major championship form lately and he performed quite well at the Scottish Open with a T16 last week. He’s become a big-time factor every time he tees it up and getting north of +150 for just a Top 20 feels too easy.
One and Done pick for The Open Championship: Tommy Fleetwood
Full disclosure, my strategy has failed me for One-and-Done as I’ve already used all the big guns that I would like to deploy for The Open. With that said, I do like Fleetwood this week to at least show respectably. After quietly finishing T4 this past week at The Renaissance Club and with a T5 earlier this year at the PGA, we’re now at a tournament where Fleetwood has finished T33, T2 and T12 in his last three starts. That’s a good trend to follow for the Englishman back in the UK and finding his form.
Note: Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20 picks should also be considered best bets, though they’re not included on the next page.
