With the 150th Open Championship taking place this week at St. Andrew’s, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler has a chance to do something special.

When you hear names like Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Tom Watson, and Arnold Palmer, you immediately think of four of the best PGA Tour players to have ever swung a golf club. Scottie Scheffler will be looking to join that elite group this week at St. Andrew’s.

Scheffler will tee it up on Thursday afternoon over Scotland, morning for us here in the United States, as the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer is looking to etch his name on the Claret Jug shortly after lunchtime on Sunday.

If Scheffler is able to win the Open Championship, he’ll join the aforementioned quartet of all-time greats as the only players to have won five times on the PGA Tour including both The Masters and The Open Championship (or British Open, if you prefer).

Scottie Scheffler will be looking to put a cap on one of the most impressive runs we’ve seen on the PGA Tour in some time. Last year, Patrick Cantlay won four events on tour. He took home the FedEx Cup, but a tie for 15th in the US Open was the highest Cantlay would finish in the major tournaments.

You’ve got to go back all the way to 2017 to even find a golfer who won five tournaments in a single season. Justin Thomas won five events that year including the PGA Championship. Thomas also finished in a tie for ninth-place in the US Open that year.

Scheffler started his 2022 campaign with a bang by winning the WM Phoenix Open in February. A few weeks later, Scheffler won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and followed that up by winning the Dell Technologies Match Play just three weeks after that.

The red-hot Scottie Scheffler rode into Augusta ranked No. 1 in the world, and took home the green jacket with a three-stroke win over Rory McIlroy at the 2022 Masters. Scheffler nearly won his second major just last month during the US Open in Massachusetts.

Scottie Scheffler finished tied for eighth at last year’s Open Championship, but he did miss the cut at last week’s Scottish Open. A lot of eyes will be on Scheffler this week as he looks to make history at the Old Course at St. Andrew’s.
