Steelers new stadium sponsor makes some sense after all

The Pittsburgh Steelers are having their iconic Heinz Field undergoing a name change — and an examination of the buyers reveal how the deal went down.

As Pittsburgh sports radio host Andrew Fillipponi eloquently put it, the ketchup bottles are coming down. Heinz Field will be no more, and in its place, a new corporate title arises: Acrisure Stadium.

Many Steelers fans aren’t so keen on the name, which certainly doesn’t have the same gravitas that the Heinz Field moniker has developed over twenty years as the home of the Steelers. Back in 2001, the Steelers moved from Three Rivers Stadium to Heinz Field, and the field has become synonymous with Pittsburgh football.

The uproar is reminiscent of what happened in Los Angeles last fall when the Staples Center became Crypto.com Arena. Like the legendary L.A. basketball franchises that followed the future of money, the Steelers made a shrewd financial decision, one that was likely facilitated by a minority shareholder in the team.

As Fillipponi noted, Acrisure is a Michigan-based insurance brokerage firm. Pittsburgh sports writer Alan Saunders further expounded on the connection between the insurance company and the Pennsylvania team: Acrisure bought Pittsburgh-based AI company Tulco, which is owned by Steelers minority shareholder Thomas Tull.

Steelers connection explains Heinz Field rename to Acrisure Stadium

As heartbreaking as it is for generations for Steelers fans, corporate sponsorship makes this a relatively common phenomenon in sports. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where several Super Bowl championships have been held, recently became Caesars Superdome.

The companies that spearhead these often unpopular rebrands usually represent the near future of commerce. It’s no coincidence that a cryptocurrency company nabbed naming rights in Los Angeles and a sports betting outfit reclaimed the iconic dome in New Orleans.

Of course, insurance has long been a big business, but Acrisure is tied to the future in a distinct way: it utilizes the “best of human and artificial intelligence,” according to their website.

Although Acrisure may be the future of insurance, it’s not necessarily the future that Pittsburgh sports fans were hoping for when they headed to the stadium to watch the Steelers play.
