3) Red Sox trade candidate from a potential surprise seller: Noah Syndergaard

This is an old surprise but still a very relevant one when it comes to the trade deadline. The Los Angeles Angels have been viewed unfavorably for weeks now. Their lengthy losing streak that cost Joe Maddon his job turned them into an obvious candidate to trade away some pieces rather than build. One of those trade candidates is Noah Syndergaard.

Another pure rental for the Red Sox to look at, Syndergaard has playoff experience already; albeit dating back to 2016 when got himself into a pitcher’s duel against Madison Bumgarner in the NL Wild Card Game. He won the only World Series game for the New York Mets a season prior as a rookie which showed just how tough he can be at times.

Syndergaard is a different pitcher now, though. He doesn’t strike out as many batters—at least not this year with the Angels. Nonetheless, for a guy with experience that could be viewed as more of a salary dump deal than much else, he’s someone Boston needs to think about.

Syndergaard won’t cost nearly as much as some of the other pitchers out there, including Rodon. He’s a short-term option for the Red Sox and maybe even someone who could shift into a bullpen role later on this season if they ever did get guys healthy.
