SF Giants: 3 fan favorites who should be traded at the deadline
3) Giants third baseman Evan Longoria
Evan Longoria is currently on the 10-day injured list with an oblique injury, but he is headed out on a rehab assignment later this week.
If all goes well, he should have about two weeks in the majors to show other teams that he is healthy and productive.
Longoria, 36, is in the final guaranteed year of his six-year, $122 million deal. Considering his health in recent years (he hasn’t played in 130 or more games in a season as a member of the Giants), they are unlikely to exercise their $13 million team option. If they decide against exercising their option, they would still have to pay him $5 million.
In addition to saving some money, they could get some prospects to replace Longoria. They could see more of David Villar, who made his MLB debut in early July, at third base instead.
The third base trade market is very sparse, as there isn’t a single third baseman in MLB Trade Rumors Top 50 trade candidates list before the trade deadline. As a result, the Giants may get another team to overpay for him because they are desperate to address a need.
