The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees delivered a crazy Friday night clash. Here’s what you might’ve missed from the wild rivalry game.

Anyone who tells you that Friday night’s series opener between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees heading into the All-Star break was just another edition of the rivalry is lying to you. Yes, it was indeed a heated battle in the Bronx, but it was also a wonderfully weird and truly wild contest, particularly from the bottom of the ninth into extra innings.

In the end, despite coughing up the lead in the final half-inning before extras and flirting with disaster in the bottom of the 10th inning as well, it was Boston that pulled out the win. New York still holds a commanding lead in the AL East. However, it was the Red Sox, coming off being swept in Tampa, that needed a victory and survived errors that have recently cost them wins to get it.

So what did we see, what did we learn, and what might you have missed from another classic between the Red Sox and Yankees? We’ve got you covered with three major takeaways from Friday night’s thriller.

Red Sox: As always, pay Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers

It becomes more baffling by the day that the Red Sox haven’t already backed the Brinks truck up for both Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers.

In the case of the latter, he remains one of the best hitters in baseball this season and continued his plight to torture New York on Friday. On the first pitch he saw against Jordan Montgomery, he laced it to deep right-center and over the fence to give Boston an early 2-0 lead. That was his only hit of the night but he also got put on base intentionally late because of the respect he commands when at the dish. And he even flashed the leather a bit on the night as well.

As for Bogaerts, not only was it another ho-hum two-hit night for the superstar shortstop, but he also showed his immense value with some elite defensive work and, of course, his baserunning smarts as the ghost runner in the top of the 11th inning, taking home plate on a ball in the dirt that bounced forward and ultimately giving the Red Sox the lead.

Every day that passes without these two stars getting paid is a misdeed by the front office in Boston.
