MLB Draft: Matt Holliday’s interview with son Jackson Holliday will make you feel old
By Mark Powell
Seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday’s son, Jackson Holliday, is expected to be a top-5 pick in Sunday’s MLB Draft. Feel old yet?
Holliday was most well-known for his time with the Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals. On Sunday, Jackson Holliday will become one of a number of second-generation players drafted, a list which includes Druw Jones, the son of Braves legend Andruw Jones.
While Jackson is debating his MLB future, and whether or not he should return to Oklahoma State for another few seasons, he gave an interview with MLB Network alongside his father.
Holliday is coming off his freshman season in Stillwater, where his father Matt is on the coaching staff. Staying with family and close to home is appetizing, but it’d be tough to turn down millions of dollars from a team which selects him in the top-5.
MLB Draft: Will Jackson Holliday go pro, or stay at Oklahoma State?
In an interview regarding second-generation talents with ESPN, Holliday acknowledged that growing up in an MLB locker room had its benefits.
“There was always a bond there just knowing our dads got to experience what we want to experience,” Holliday said. “We all play our games like our dads did. And we all have an advantage over everyone else: being raised in baseball.”
Keith Law, and MLB Draft insider and MLB prospect writer for The Athletic, hinted that Holliday’s bloodline could very well help him come Sunday night. Law projected Holliday to go first overall to the Baltimore Orioles.
“It also hasn’t hurt that his father, Matt, was a longtime big-leaguer and seven-time All-Star, and that scouts have been just as impressed by Jackson’s younger brother, Ethan, who may become a top-5 pick in the 2025 draft. Jackson’s heading for the same range this year,” Law wrote.
In all likelihood, Holliday will go pro, though he wants to keep his chips on the table. Doing so could help him land a signing bonus worthy of a No. 1 overall selection.
