3. Hideki Matsuyama may ditch the PGA Tour for LIV Golf
Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese-born player to win the Masters Tournament when he donned the green jacket following his victory at Augusta National in April of 2021. Matsuyama has won twice on the PGA Tour since then and may now be headed to join LIV Golf.
This will likely affect Matsuyama’s ability to play in the upcoming President’s Cup to be held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte late this September. The same fate is true of South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen.
Hideki Matsuyama is rumored to be making his decision on whether or not to join LIV Golf after next month’s FedEx Championship. Matsuyama is currently ranked No. 14 in the world golf rankings. LIV Golf has petitioned to have its participants be included in the rankings system, but no decision has been made on that matter as of yet.
LIV Golf is handing out major money and the winnings to be had are in the range of $3M-$4M. The PGA Tour is bleeding and it’s difficult to know if and/ or when that may stop. Cameron Smith is in Greg Norman’s sights and he’s got his eye on others as well.
