Most home runs in MLB Home Run Derby history [Updated 2023]

The Home Run Derby will be held at Dodger Stadium this year and competitors will have high marks to reach to break records.

The Home Run Derby has grown a lot from the days when it was instituted as part of the All-Star Game festivities back in 1985. At first, it was an event that wasn’t even televised, but that has changed immensely over the years.

On Monday night, we’ll get to see some of baseball’s best power-hitters in Pete Alonso, Julio Rodriguez, Adolis Garcia, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Adley Rutschman, Randy Arozarena, Luis Robert Jr. and Mookie Betts go to battle at the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby.

To achieve home run records in the Home Run Derby, those players will have to hit a ton of home runs. Here are the home run records in the Derby.

MLB Home Run Derby record for Round 1

The record for the number of home runs in the first round of the Home Run Derby was set in the 2021 contest by eventual champion Pete Alonso. At Coors Field in Colorado, the Mets first baseman hit 35 home runs in the first round. Julio Rodriguez made a run at that number in 2022, though, as the Mariners young superstar hit 32 in the first round, the most by a rookie in the history of the event.

We could see more fireworks as both players are in the field for the 2023 derby.

MLB Home Run Derby record for Round 2

The record for home runs in the second round of the Home Run Derby was set by Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019 in Cleveland.

He had 40 home runs but that includes two swing-offs. Guerrero was tied with then-Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson at the end of the round with 29 home runs. They had a tiebreaker but they were tied again at 37 after it. They had one swing-off where they each hit one home run but in the second swing-off, Guerrero won by hitting two homers compared to Pederson.

MLB Home Run Derby record for Final Round

For the finals round of the Home Run Derby, the record was also set by Pete Alonso last year at Coors Field in Denver.

He defeated Baltimore Orioles first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini in the final round with 23 home runs (Mancini had 22).

Considering the thin air of Denver, it will be difficult to replicate those numbers this year at Dodger Stadium but you never know what could happen.

MLB Home Run Derby record for most HRs in a single Derby

Bolstered by his monster 40 homers in the second round back in 2019, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also set the record for the most home runs in a single Home Run Derby, hitting 91 that year in the contest. He was bested in the finals, however, by Alonso, giving him the record, but not the coveted derby crown.
