Juan Soto rumors: 7 teams make offers, including 1 surprise
By Scott Rogust
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, seven teams have been in contact with the Washington Nationals on a Juan Soto trade, three of them are from the NL West.
The MLB trade deadline is a matter of days away, and all eyes will be on the Washington Nationals from here on out. That is because they are open to trading star outfielder Juan Soto after he turned down a 15-year, $440 million contract extension offer. Whether they do so remains to be seen, but there are teams that are interested in seeing if they can pull off a deal for Soto.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Nationals have begun fielding preliminary offers for Soto, with seven teams already “weighing in.” Those teams include the Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants.
MLB rumors: Seven teams make offers for Juan Soto
As you can see, the NL West is heavily represented in this list of interested teams.
The Dodgers have shown over the years that they are willing to bring in the top stars in the game to help them make a push for a World Series title. The Padres have done the same, bringing in top players like Manny Machado, Blake Snell, and Mike Clevinger. As for the Giants, they have been in on big-name free agent outfielders in recent years, but were never able to get one to sign. Perhaps the most notable name was Bryce Harper, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reported on the day of the Home Run Derby that general managers believe that Soto would be traded ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline if he were unable to reach an agreement with the Nationals on a new contract.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden reported that the Nationals are looking for multiple major league players, top prospects, and a team to offload pitcher Patrick Corbin’s contract in any Soto deal.
Soto is still under team control until the conclusion of the 2024 season, so the Nationals are not exactly in a rush to get a deal done. But, if the right offer presents itself, they could be inclined to move him. Aug. 2 will be a day to follow.
