2. Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have a solid foundation in place to support an acquisition of Tkachuk. They have cap space ($10.3MM per CapFriendly), an open roster spot, and the prospect depth necessary to swing a trade. Not to mention, they also have an extra 2023 second-round pick and a large list of expiring contracts in the near future (Copp, Chiarot, Husso and others) to support the long-term signing of Tkachuk.

As things currently stand, the Red Wings have the third youngest roster in the league and plenty of young talent to spare, making a trade with Calgary all the more likely (and attractive) to Detroit.

The big hurdle in a potential deal between the two clubs would be Tkachuk’s willingness to sign a long-term deal. The Red Wings’ have the funds, but the interest needs to be mutual.

In Detroit’s defense, GM Steve Yzerman and Co. are ever so slowly building a team that would be an attractive long-term home to just about anybody in the league. With veterans Andrew Copp, David Perron and Ben Chiarot already aboard and youngsters Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond on hand as well, Tkachuk would be surrounded by intriguing talent that would make him all the more likely to sign the papers.
