Red Sox rumors: 3 All-Stars not named Juan Soto to trade for at the deadline
The Boston Red Sox are likely to be buyers at the trade deadline.
The Boston Red Sox are in a much better and different place than they were to start the season. Through May 15, the Red Sox were in last place in the American League East with a 13-21 record. Since then, the Red Sox are 35-24, which is the fourth-best record in the American League in that span. That has got them into the playoff picture as they are just two games back of the Blue Jays for the final AL Wild Card spot.
But with less than two weeks before the trade deadline, there are still a few moves that the Red Sox need to make to gain some ground in both the AL East and in the Wild Card picture.
Of the 60+ All-Stars this season, a fair amount of them could be traded before the deadline so here are three All-Stars that the Red Sox should trade for.
3 All-Stars the Red Sox should trade for before the deadline
Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo
Luis Castillo has been one of the most underrated starting pitchers in the last few years and that is partially because he pitches for the Cincinnati Reds.
In 13 starts this season, Castillo has a 2.77 ERA (166 ERA+). He is averaging six innings per start with a 3.04 FIP, a 1.077 WHIP, and an average of 3.1 walks and 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He was tied for the lead in most starts made last season (33) and he had a 3.98 ERA (117 ERA+). Overall, since 2019, he has a 134 ERA+, which is fifth-best among the 17 starting pitchers with at least 500 innings pitched in that span.
The Red Sox have a starter’s ERA of 4.14 on the season, which is 19th in baseball. They also enter the unofficial second half of the season with three of the six pitchers with at least seven starts on the injured list. In addition, Chris Sale is on the injured list again with a broken pinky. He hopes to return by the end of the season but asking him to be the club’s ace after making only 11 starts in the last three seasons (including this year) is not advisable.
