Braves: 1995 World Series champion passes away at 58

Dwight Smith, a member of the 1995 World Series champion Atlanta Braves and eight-year MLB veteran, died at the age of 58 on Friday. 

An outfield for the 1995 World Series champion Atlanta Braves, Dwight Smith passed away on Friday. He was 58 years old.

The Braves organization released a statement on his death on Friday afternoon after news of his passing.

Smith appeared in 103 games for the Braves in the 1995 season, slashing .252/.327/.412 with three home runs and 21 RBI in the regular season in under 150 plate appearances. En route to the World Series, though, he hit quite well in a spot role for Atlanta, going 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI as he helped the club get a ring.

Beyond that run to winning the World Series, Smith was initially drafted by the Cubs in 1984 and made his debut in 1989. He went on to finish second in NL Rookie of the Year voting that season and spent five seasons with Chicago. After bouncing around in 1994, he spent two seasons with the Braves before retiring after the 1996 campaign.

As mentioned by the organization, Smith is survived by his wife and three children, including Dwight Jr., who was a first-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2011 and was in the White Sox minor league system earlier this season before his release in May.

Smith will be missed around Truist Park and the Braves organization.
